General Description
Location: Rhodes (Rodos) is situated at the N end of Rhodes Island, in the Aegean.
General overview: Rhodes consists of an outer and inner harbour collectively known as Limenas Rodos. The port of Rhodes is a port complex that consists of six harbors which stretch along the coastline of the main town, namely Mandraki, Kolona, Akandia, Kamiros, Skala and Lardos. The outer harbour, comprising Limenas Akantias (Acandia Port) and Limenas Emporikos separated by a central mole, is protected from E by an outer mole. The harbour accommodates large ferries, cargo vessels and cruise ships. The inner harbour, known as Limenas Mandraki, is the ancient port and is protected from E by an inner mole, used by small ferries and pleasure craft. The cruise port in Rhodes has 6 piers for as many cruise ships up to 380m in length and up to 10m draft.
From the port of Rhodes, Anek Lines/Aegeon Pelagos and Blue Star Ferries serve regular routes to Santorini and Piraeus/ Athens. Anek Lines/Aegeon Pelagos also provides year-round sailings to Kasos, Diafani/ Karpathos, Halki, Karpathos town itself, Milos, Anafi and Sitia/ Crete, as well as a seasonal service to Heraklion/ Crete. Furthermore, Blue Star Ferries offers Rhodes ferry trips regularly to Astypalea, Kastelorizo, Nisyros, Syros and Tilos, and seasonal crossings to Anafi, Katapola/ Amorgos, Naxos and Paros.
The principal exports are fruit, wine and spirits; the chief imports are cotton and woollen goods, cereals, flour, sugar, tobacco, coffee and vegetables.
Traffic figures: Over 700 vessels and 1,622,000 passengers visit the port annually.
